The city of Gresham could not establish itself as a city unless given a post office and postal code. Lewis Shattuck, son of a pioneer family, was the first mayor. Since 1981, Gresham has been the home of the Mount Hood Jazz Festival, an annual festival of jazz musicians. The oldest of the city's four high schools is Gresham High School, home of The Gophers.
